Organic food is now in fashion but are organic products a guarantee of a healthier food? In fact, there is a lot of controversial evidence on this matter. Read more: Is organic more nutritious? or Think organic is better for you? However, whatever the studies show, if you want to decrease the intake of preservatives and pesticides, I would suggest to choose organic whenever it is possible for you. I would love to buy everything organic but it isn't a reality. This is because they aren't always available in my grocery shop and organic tend to cost more than normal produce. So, I have applied a method that I will choose organic according to the fact which fruits and vegetables contain more chemicals and pesticides than others. I will call these the dirty dozen. On the other hand, there are clean fifteen fruits and vegetables which are the lowest in pesticides. In this case, I don't have to buy these organic because they are safer and "cleaner" than the fruits and vegetables which are described as dirty dozen.
When should you choose organic food?
Dirty dozen:
apples, spinach, blueberries ( in the USA), celery, cucumbers, grapes, peaches, potatoes, lettuce, strawberries, bell peppers, nectarines
Buy these organic!
Clean fifteen:
asparagus, avocado, cabbage, cantaloupe, eggplant, kiwi, mushrooms, sweet peas, onions, mangoes, grapefruit, pineapples, watermelon, sweet potatoes, corn
These are lowest in pesticides!
Moreover, when I buy my fruits and vegetables, I always try to choose local or domestic produce. Besides this, I never buy any products which are from China or India. These countries don't have strict regulations when it comes to food so I don't trust these products to be clean enough. For example honey which is made in China can also include syrup so it isn't pure honey. I once made a mistake and bought Indian grapes. I had to throw them into the trash bin because I could only taste chemicals and preservatives!
According to a Finnish study (Jussi Riekki: Ruoka vaa'alla:luomua vai tavanomaista?), the label organic isn't always a guarantee of a better nutrient content. However, there are a lot of research about the harmfulness of the pesticides so that is why you should choose organic whenever it is possible.Although you may not notice the use of organic produce in your own health, in the long run it might play a significant role: it will show up in your grandchildren's well being. This is because many harmful ingredients and chemicals will move up in the food chain and as a result will store in the fat tissue and eventually will move from mother to a child.
Single apple and its chemical cocktail won't do any harm, but how about after tens of years of chronic excess consumption?
